Yampa Valley Recycles is proud of their dedicated volunteers without whom we believe an expansion of recycling services and education would never happen.  Are we tooting our own horn - you bet we are!  Take a look at some of our accomplishments over the past couple of years and decide for yourself.  Then take a moment to consider making a tax deductible donation to our recycling fund or perhaps consider volunteering yourself.  We'd love to have you.

2000 Colorado Recycler
of the Year
Nominated by the City of Steamboat Springs, Routt County Board of Commissioners, City of Craig, City of Hayden, and the Chamber Resort Association, Yampa Valley Recycles was given the prestigious award of Overall Colorado Recycler of the Year by the Colorado Association for Recycling.

Rural Recycling Seminar

Yampa Valley Recycles hosted a rural recycling seminar at Howelson Hill which brought together for the first time municipal representatives from Routt, Moffat, Steamboat Springs, Craig, Hayden, and Meeker along with private businesses, volunteers, and waste haulers to identify the actions needed to increase recycling efforts in the Yampa Valley.  As a result a task force committee was created to investigate how we can form a co-operative to expand recycling services throughout Routt and Moffat counties.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Drive
In 1999 Yampa Valley Recycles blew the socks off the HHW collection numbers done in previous years by the City of Steamboat Springs.  We tripled the amount of hazardous waste ever collected without even doubling the price of disposal.

Waste Assessment Survey

Knowing what we as citizens throw away and how much is reclaimed through recycling activities is paramount to being able to measure the effectiveness of any recycling program.  Yampa Valley Recycles tackled this problem by conducting a waste assessment survey which can be viewed on this website or at the Bud Werner Memorial Library.
Recycling Drives
Over the years Yampa Valley Recycles has attempted to raise community awareness on the issues of recycling by hosting and promoting multi-day collection drives.  1999 saw a Names & Numbers phone book collection drive as well as a glass drive in honor of America Recycles Day.  Our magazine drive in 1998 was so successful that Waste Management changed their collection practices to include magazines as a permanent part of their recycling program.  We have also been instrumental in promoting the annual Christmas tree mulching programs in Steamboat Springs.
Recycling Wranglers Program
The promotion and expansion of recycling services in our valley would not be complete without the help of our brand new Wrangler Program.  Wranglers assist Whistlepig Willy with education efforts in the schools, with our elderly, and at Waste Management.  Take a peak at our Wrangler page to discover more.

Free Curbside Program

The cry for curbside recycling has been with our valley for over ten years and was the driving force which created the group known as Yampa Valley Recycles.  In 1990 we went from a haphazard recycling program to one which included a materials recovery facility and curbside recycling in the City of Steamboat Springs for those willing to pay an extra fee on their trash bill.  The millennia has brought with it a new commingled curbside program which includes the collection of more materials and is at last offered at no cost to Waste Management customers. Visit our Curbside page to discover how to sign up for this program.
Mobile Glass Crusher

1997 was met with the news that Waste Management would no longer be recycling glass and Yampa Valley Recycles responded by trying to solve the problem.  The solution was the creation of a mobile glass crusher capable of receiving any colored glass to be re-used as road base material.  Our crusher can also be rented to other communities interested in reducing their glass transportation costs to end markets on the front range.

Yampa Valley Recycles volunteers have given hours of their time to ensure that recycling services become a part of our valley and continue to grow.  Help us continue in our efforts by considering making a tax deductible donation to our recycling fund.  Your contributions help us to fund the projects already underway and help us to obtain matching grant monies for future projects.  Make your check payable to: YVCF- Recycling Fund
